Initially just a training race to get some decent kms in, the 170km road race took an unexpected turn when Luke found himself on the podium in third place. Aiming to get in some good kilometres, Luke also noted the benefit of the tactics and race craft that road racing requires.
Luke entered the SA Road Cycling Championships 170km race in Oudtshoorn as part of his training programme. Aiming to get in some good kilometres, Luke has also noted the benefit of the tactics and race craft road racing requires. Comprising 5 laps of 34km each, and with a solid 378m of climbing for each lap, the day’s race was intensified by blistering conditions and a high of 38°C. Perfect for a training ride!
Although the initial goal was to increase his race fitness, Luke’s instincts took over. Rather unexpectedly, as road racing is not his speciality, Luke found himself on the U/23 podium in third place.
The season is just getting started, and Luke will soon be heading to Europe to chase a few UCI points in Greece and Italy in March, before returning for the SA XCO Champs in April.
