Akhona Phungula is a proud graduate of Dynamic DNA, a Dynamic Technologies group company. Before enrolling with Dynamic DNA, she had earned her BCom and BCom IST (Hons) degrees from the University of KZN and was aiming to gain practical experience to complement her academic studies and help her break into the tech industry. Today she is a Microsoft Graduate in the Application Development and Maintenance Division of a major state revenue institution.
She says, “I discovered Dynamic DNA through a LinkedIn post advertising a learnership opportunity. What attracted me was the strong focus on practical, work experience-focused training and the opportunity to earn globally recognised certifications. It stood out as a programme that bridges the gap between the theory I had learnt and real-world applications I can actually use.”
Through Dynamic DNA, Akhona completed several Microsoft certifications, including AZ-900, AI-900, AZ-104, AZ-204 and AZ-400, which led to her being offered the graduate position. “Dynamic DNA helped me transition from being a student with theoretical knowledge to someone ready to contribute meaningfully in a workplace,” she says.
“The programme gave me the ability to learn and apply knowledge in a practical environment, but one of the most impactful lessons I learnt was the importance of showing up. The programme taught me discipline and consistency and encouraged me to step out of my comfort zone by actively asking questions during live classes. I also learnt how to collaborate with others and was able to communicate technical concepts clearly. All this reinforced the value of continuous learning and enhanced my ability to adapt in any environment.”
Dynamic DNA aims to impart far more than just technical expertise – they know that soft skills such as communication, work ethic, adapting to business culture and being a productive part of a team are essential for their graduates’ success. This is why mentorship and guidance are key tenets of the company. Akhona says her mentors made a significant impact on her journey. “Their guidance and willingness to share knowledge helped me grow both technically and professionally.”
Motivated by the desire to support her family and by her personal commitment to become better than she was the day before, Akhona works hard, is deeply involved in her church and is driven by her passion for continuous learning.
“My immediate goal is to strengthen my presentation and communication skills while deepening my understanding of cloud technologies,” she says. Looking ahead, she aims to become a well-rounded full-stack Java developer with strong experience in both backend and frontend technologies. “I want to grow into a role where I can contribute to impactful projects while also mentoring others.”
Her advice to young people entering the tech space is to focus on building practical skills rather than relying solely on theory. “Take advantage of opportunities to gain hands-on experience, work on projects and earn certifications that are recognised in the industry. Stay consistent, be curious and commit to improving yourself.”
