XCO rider Luke Moir gives us the lowdown on his off-season after an intense year with Cube Factory Racing and on his plans in the elite men’s group.
What does training during race season entail?
After some time off after a long year, I head into base training. This consists of long rides and long intervals to build fitness and endurance. It’s essential to get a good base in as it can affect my whole year. Stamina is crucial, particularly as I head into the second half of the season.
Take us through a typical day during a World Cup race weekend:
A typical day starts with course practice with the team to look at the course and dial in our lines. I'd then have a chat with my coach, followed by a hot lap where I designate certain parts of the track to different zones of effort to make sure I'm racing as efficiently as possible. The rest of the day is all about recovery, taking the right supplements, eating correctly, and massages.
How does the travel impact your racing?
For me travelling takes a massive toll; it really affects my body and the impact can last for up to a week. Because of that we try to travel as early as possible so my body has a chance to recover in time for the event. In some instances, it’s not possible to get to the event early enough, so the correct post-flight recovery is very important.
What did the last year with Cube Factory Racing mean to you?
To be part of a European team was something I had dreamt of since I started racing. The atmosphere was very professional but also fun, which helps a lot with the racing. It does also come with added pressure to perform, but I think that’s a good thing. The team takes away other pressures and worries, which help me to keep a focused mind on the task ahead.
What are your plans as an Elite rider?
Going into the elite group will be very tough but I am absolutely up for the challenge. I’ve set some goals for myself that I hope to reach, but a lot of learning will happen as well.
What does your off-season training look like?
There's no scheduled off-season training programme. For me it's just casual exercise such as hiking, running and motocross riding to stay fit and keep my reflexes sharp.
How do you relax during off-season?
I spend most of my off season hanging with mates and doing stuff I usually am unable to do during the racing season. I really enjoy this time but am always eager to get back on my bike.
We know you’re a fan of extreme sports – what are your favourite ways to get that adrenalin rush when you’re not racing?
I enjoy riding my motorbike as it does aid riding. I also do a bit of enduro riding where I can hone my skills and ride features that my XCO bike is unable to do. I enjoy playing some touchies on the beach with mates and doing cliff jumping.
Any extreme sports you’d still like to try?
I would love to race cars one day.
Favourite World Cup race?
Brazil was such an awesome experience, from the great weather to the awesome people. It was insane to race with the wild crowds and sick tracks – and I can’t wait to go back next year.
Do you have a favourite place to ride in South Africa?
I don’t have a favourite place to ride, but I enjoy the wide variety of trails we have. It’s really cool to mix it all up and hit flow trails as well as rocky and technical descents.
